Contractor Fraud: How to Avoid
Don't fall prey to these common come-ons

Avoiding contractor fraud largely depends on knowing when an offer is just too good to be true. Here are a few of the most commonhome repairscams and how to avoid them.

Free Inspection. This is probably the biggest home repair scam around. A contractor advertises a "free, no-obligation" inspection of your home, and shows up all shined and polished and proceeds to conduct the inspection. The result, however, is always the same:

HVAC Filter Maintenance

HVAC Filter Maintenance

Part of responsible homeownership includes, of course, regular home maintenance.  And there are some tasks that, if deferred, can lead to a home system that’s inefficient and overworked, which can result in problems and expenses.  One such task is changing the filter of the home’s HVAC system.  It’s simple and inexpensive, and taking care of it at least every three months can mean the difference between optimum comfort and avoidable repairs.

What Can Go Wrong

Heat Pumps- Why is it Frezzing

Heat Pumps
Is my furnace working properly. I hear this a lot when people have heat pumps. They see that the A/C unit on the outside of the home is frozen over.

As the air moves over the evaporator coils, the gas starts to warm back up. The warm gas moves out of the furnace and back to the exterior air conditioner unit where the fan on the exterior unit cools the gas back down again. The gas then enters the compressor and sends the gas back into the home starting the cycle back over again.

Furnace Cleaning

Routine Furnace Cleaning
All winter long, a furnace heats and circulates air. A properly maintained filter will prevent most particulate matter from getting inside the machine.  However, some very micro-sized stuff and fumes can get in. My home has a cigarette smoker and a cigar smoker. Twice a year (fall and spring), I open up the furnace and tidy up.

Safety is very important. The control module and blower motor are electric. There is a control module and a transformer where voltage and current are normally present.

Water Heater Maintenance

Very few people know that in order to keep your water heater running properly and efficiently, very simple maintenance procedures need to be performed. (These come with the instructions and are often overlooked.)

As water is pumped into your water heater tank dirt, sediment and various minerals settle on the bottom. Depending on your water quality these extra "ingredients" can add up rather quickly robbing your water heater's efficiency and costing you in the long run. If left unchecked they can not only make your water heater work harder but also allow your tank to rust and slowly be eaten away until you need to replace the entire unit which is very costly yet easily preventable.
